Caterham Prep School

Have completed Surfers Against Sewage’s Plastic Free Schools programme and are now an official Plastic Free School!

They have learned about unnecessary single-use plastic, detected it in their school and eliminated it for good, while challenging big businesses and the government to play their part in solving the plastic pollution crisis too!

To solve this crisis, we need a cultural change across society, and who better than young people to take the lead and show us how it’s done! By eliminating at least three unnecessary, single-use plastic items from their school, they have shifted the narrative away from traditional recycling models, which don’t present the solution to the plastic pollution crisis, over to a focus on reduction.

Surfers Against Sewage is calling for joined up policies that dramatically reduce the production and consumption of non-essential, single-use, polluting plastic, and build a circular economy that ensures plastics do not end up in the ocean, but instead, are designed to be reused, repaired and then effectively recycled in truly circular systems. These young ocean activists have used the power of their voice to tell industry giants and the government what they think, and caused ripples and waves of positive changes in their school and wider community.

We couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved, but their plastic-free journey doesn’t stop there. Power to the pupils!

“These young ocean activists have challenged themselves, their school, big business and the government and made positive lasting changes, tackling single-use plastic pollution. Surfers Against Sewage is calling for changes from the playgrounds to the front benches of parliament and these pupils have made this happen, inspiring countless others along the way. We can’t wait to see what else they can achieve together, but for now, we are all celebrating their achievements (with reusable cups, of course)!”
